Ciabatta is the new Focaccia

My curiosity piqued by yet another stupid Jack in the Box commercial, I picked up a bag of ciabatta rolls at Costco to see what the fuss was about. At $3.99 for eight 4½ oz. servings, they're a tad pricey, but I'm pleased to report this product (from the La Brea Bakery in Van Nuys, CA) is a winner.

If you're unfamiliar with ciabatta, it's a square roll that's sort of like a scone on the outside, puffy like an english muffin on the inside, and with a taste on par with gourmet pizza dough. It doesn't overpower whatever you stuff it with, but provides a nice finish.

Like most trendy foods mass market quick service restaurants have discovered, these will probably disappear once The Next Big Thing comes along. In the meantime, I'm working up a good fantasy that involves ciabatta rolls, a picnic basket, and a Sunday afternoon in Stern Grove.
