Walking down 4th St. around 11:45 a.m., I encountered a solemn procession trickling northward from Moscone West: nearly all men, wearing black shirts with white tags hanging from neck straps. The few tags that had not been flipped over were identifiable as Apple World-Wide Developer Conference badges--if you looked closely enough. Not yet having learned details of the keynote, I could only surmise from this unofficial "exit poll" that Macintosh developers were not happy--stark contrast to the upbeat tone of previous years. Not a single smile to be seen. Around them, the usual flow of tourists, chattering excitedly, enjoying San Francisco's beautiful weather, oblivious to the conference attendees who all looked like they'd just lost their best friend.
