Television exposes viewers to diversity!

Today's dailydishrss informs us of a "recent British study": 'Buffy' Blamed for Pagan Rise.

Hollywood actress Sarah Michelle Gellar's hit show "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" has been blamed for 50,000 women abandoning traditional Western religion to study paganism.

(N.B. Buffy went off the air five years ago.)

It never ceases to amaze me how television (well, not just television) gets "blamed" for all sorts of deviance. While it's usually cited as an excuse for avoiding personal responsibility, this complaint—ironically—is about exactly the opposite: people being motivated to think for themselves, learning about something they were unfamiliar with, and making individual choices.

SFGate (which publishes the Daily Dish), coincidentally carries a wonderful column titled Finding My Religion, which has run some excellent profiles of people whose explorations of spirituality have led them down interesting (and sometimes quite unexpected) paths.

Of course, we all know nothing beats South Park if you're looking for a no-nonsense presentation of What "They" Believe.
